Increasing muscle mass over the period of a year takes specific strength and cardiovascular training routines. I have simplified my strength-training plan with cardio exercise to reduce training to four days a week for 90 minutes each of the four days. My strength training consist of only 4 full body exercises with a cardio warmup per day and are focused on building lean muscle. I will not do more than my routine as this lead to muscle reduction due to the lack of nutrition the body can absorb. My desire to be stronger is to maintain my competitive edge when applying for physical demanding employment opportunities and to keep up with the demands of the military. Another benefit to building strength and maintaining fitness is it reduces stress by taking me away from my daily life and help put my mind at ease. A sub goal I have set is sticking to a regimented diet plan and obtaining required sleep starting November 2015. According to Obadike (2013), to gain ten to twelve pounds of lean muscle mass a year I must eat 18 calories for every pound I weigh daily while strength training four days a week. I will start by eating heathy while consuming the appropriate number of calories needed, sleep for at least 7 hours and arrive at the gym on time ready to train. At 235 pounds, I will need to eat 4,230 calories a day, which will allow me to gain 1 pound of muscle per month. I find it extremely beneficial when feeling overwhelmed to work out the days frustration and numbing my brain with the massive amount of endorphin release. Endorphins is a released chemical in the body that gives the perception of reduced pain and puts the brain and body in a sedative state (Furlong n.d.). Exercise also helps with my emotional state, for example, exercise gives me a sense of self-accomplishment, feeling better about my body image and I achieve more sleep at night (Myers, 2014).
