In the article “Job Redesign for Expanded HIM Functions”, the author Elizabeth Layman carefully considers the effects of the “Implementation of electronic health records in the health care delivery system” and how working harder may not be a long-term solution to survive these changes (Layman, 2011). With changes must come goals. For example, transitioning from a “paper-based environment” to an “electronic environment” could have a significant impact of the entire health care sector as well the economy and government regulations if proper planning and organizing including setting goals are not implemented. Every step has to be flawless in order to prevent disruption. As far as Organizational changes are concerned, the principles of goal setting are applied once again in the planning and implementation on how to face changing client population as well as the changes in roles and functions of health information professionals. With these changes, at least 29 new roles were identified (Layman, 2011). This article is mainly a proposition on how to address changes within the health care sector all the way to specific department such as HIS and its employees. If implemented properly, the proposed action of job enrichment can have major positive effects on the way the HIS Department changes and adapts to any incoming changes. Overall, the article shows how the principles of goal setting can bring an entire sector and everything underneath its umbrella to smoothly transition its way into a more technologically advanced organization or sector. The principles of job enrichment can motivate the entire HIS Department and improve their communication and the way they perform each and every tasks all the while improving the health care system and its clients within it.
