Goal for Attending If I was only allowed to walk away from this experience with one thing, I would want it to be

Greatest Commitment/Contribution
My greatest commitment by far has been to myself. Prior to attending Neosho High School’s alternative school, I was at Joplin High School. I faced a lot of discrimination, not only from my peers but from the staff and administration as well. Being segregated and discriminated against impacted my mental health in a very negative way. I stopped attending school altogether and was failing all of my classes. I knew I wasn’t the best me I could be. I needed to change something and fast. After weighing my options with the schools in the surrounding districts, I found a one I thought I could excel in.

A group called the Little Rock Nine was nine black students enrolled into a formerly all-white school in Little Rock, Arkansas and they had to walk into that school brave, and trust it for their lives. On September 4 1957, as the nine black children were walking to school they were mobbed by white people being touched and yelled at with mean racial remarks and fearing for their young lives just trying to get an education. Many people who suffered from segregation did not let these oppressing times stop them from accomplishing their dreams, and have become important inspirations to all.…

My first memory at North Carolina Governor’s School West is of crying next to my parents on a bench under a giant tree. It was move-in day for the five-and-a-half-week session, and I was already sure that they would be the worst weeks of my life. I was terrified; I knew no one except two students from my high school, who were rising juniors and to whom I had never spoken before. After that stressful first day, I fell asleep unsure of how I could make it on my own in a place filled with such talented, intelligent, and unfamiliar people. A week later, I knew that Governor’s School would be one of the most treasured experiences of my entire life.…

In elementary school, my mom brought me to my first Ole Miss soccer game. As the players warmed up, Hannah Weatherly, an All-American forward, inspected the Mississippi State players like a spider stalking its prey. As the referee’s lips touched the whistle to start the game, the players hustled as if their lives depended on it. Throughout the game, shots were fired; penalties were taken, and tackles were made. The fans throughout the game boasted, “Hotty Toddy!”…

At Xavier University we believe in the “All for One and One for All” philosophy; showing that camaraderie and equality among all are still possible. One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. I also advised them to make good decisions and form relationships with people who would motivate them to succeed.…

While beginning my search for the universities I wanted to apply to I started to look at the overall mission of the university. The section of the Barry mission statement that states “learning leads to knowledge and truth, reflection leads to informed action, and a commitment to social justice leads to collaborative services” is what intrigued about Barry University and why I applied. All of these qualities and core commitments are things I believe not only that I can contribute to, but that can contribute to my personal growth and achievements. To contribute to all of these core commitments you have to be strong and open minded about a new academic workload, and all the new and diverse things you will encounter on this journey through college.…

Being a member of this distinguished society is what I have strived towards since elementary school. Watching presentations and hearing stories from individuals in high school from a young age (who were at the time active National Honor Society members), inspired the archetype that I aspired to be –the archetype of an individual who shares the four characteristics that National Honor Society stands for: scholarship, service, leadership and character. Throughout my high school career, I worked towards the scholarship aspect. Despite where I am currently, my freshman year had not gone as well as I hoped it would.…

This has supported subnormal race relations that have led to blacks having lower social standing in America. This societal view is a factor in unequal access to employment, education, and housing (Pittman, 2011). Race discrimination affects the overall psychological and physiological well-being of African-Americans.
