Recently, the UN has come out with a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to accomplish by the year 2030. Goal 13 is to, “take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts” (“SDGs & Topics”, 2015). Targets have been set in place to accomplish this goal. The first target is to “strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries” (“SDGs & Topics”, 2015). Much of this target is measurable. Based on the known effects of past natural disasters, countries could conceivably identify their vulnerabilities to climate-related hazards, then evaluate what measures they would need to put in place to minimize damage and maximize resilience to such occurrences. This target is measurable because as people are educated about climate change, they will start to educate other people and so on. From this, people will build goals to combat climate change in their daily life. Reducing consumption and increasing recycling for example. By adding more warning devices in areas where big storms most often occur, more sea walls in places where sea levels are known to be high, etc. we will be able to measure the effects that they …show more content…
They are unable to combat climate change directly unless they battle the root cause (greenhouse gasses). Vaguely, goal 13.2 states, “integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning.” Unless they are referring to legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions or to remove and store (“fix”) carbon from the atmosphere, this target has no direct impact on combatting climate change. The only target that does directly combat climate change is target 3. By educating people about climate change, they are more likely to reduce their daily greenhouse gas emissions and therefore collectively reduce climate
