The book Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee should not have been published. Harper Lee was manipulated into publishing a book that should never have been on the shelves. The book was never complete enough to be a book that fans of her should read, after publishing her first novel To Kill a Mockingbird she set her own standards too high for her second book that was merely a rough draft to meet. The opinions of her and the characters in her book were changed dramatically. Atticus Finch was a main character of both books who defended a black man named Tom Robinson in To Kill a Mockingbird. After they read her book they told her that it felt unfinished, like a rough draft, then told her to write a new one and come back when that one was done. The book she wrote after that was To kill a Mockingbird. She never let anyone edit Go Set a Watchman” Harper Lee wanted to have the novel published exactly as it was written, without editorial intervention,” Jonathan Burnham”(Alter). This could explain why many thought she could not publish it at the time. Because she was not an author yet, and needed to get her name out there before publishing a book unedited. The first people she took it to told her she needed to write a new one because that one was unfinished. “In fact, Watchman is believed by many to merely be a “draft” of what became her final work.”(Giraldi). It was very raw and didn’t sugar coat things like it should have at the time she wanted to publish it. ”Ms. Lee’s publisher, HarperCollins, said there was never a discussion of toning down Atticus’s racist remarks to preserve his moral image.”(Alter).
