I’m a publisher who has recently been faced with an ethical decision regarding publishing the book “Go Set a Watchman” by Harper E. Lee. My purpose in writing this paper is to provide detailed ethical to back up my decision to publish the book or not publish the book. As defined by Aristotle in the video “Defining moments” ethics is about character and judgment. Using my character and judgment which is defined by my values, I will have to choose whether to publish the book “Go set a Watchman” which already has 2 million pre-ordered copies or to not publish it due to the fact Ms. Lee, the author who is 88 years old, deaf, and blind; may be getting taken advantage of by her attorney. I was taught from a young age, that a persons morals and decision making define who they are. I come from a business background; my grandfather started his own telephone sales business when he was 25. Recently the business was handed down to my father and now he runs it. He has taught me that with owning a business you must work through dilemmas by making decisions based on your moral values, this has been detrimental to my publishing career. The moral values that have been instilled in me from my childhood consist of being loyal, kind to everyone, and to look out for myself as well as others. My character and the character that others perceive me to have is the most important aspect in getting good business. I believe that my character, and the way I build up my character affect the type of business I will create in the future. Carter has previously been accused of taking advantage of Ms. Lee; in the early 2000s she got her to sign a paper that stated a journalist was taking advantage of her. Alice her sister came to the discovery and quickly wrote the journalist an apology that stated, “When I questioned Tonja I learned that she had without my knowledge typed out the statement, carried it to The Meadows and had Nelle Harper sign it” (Cox, John Woodrow). In order to protect my character I must stay away from people like this. The last piece of framework I used to make the right decision was deciding whether my choice would work in the world today. I feel that by not publishing the book I maintaining business with only people I can trust and proving to the world that I look out for my authors. My decision will affect Tanya Carter and the 2 million people that have preordered a copy of the book. Carter I don’t have much sympathy for, I feel that Carter’s action to publish the book is based on personal gain rather then helping Ms. Lee. By not publishing the book the people that preordered it will be reimbursed and therefore I don’t see any
