Do you know what a banned book is? A banned book is a book that has drug usage or explicit language, etc. One of many banned books, “Go Ask Alice” has to be one of them. It’s banned because of its sexual behavior, drug usage and explicit language. By examining the talk of sex, drug usage and explicit language, it is clear that this book needs to be banned in all school libraries. From an article I’ve found, “Go Ask Alice is a diary of a teen-age girl who committed suicide, is the censored book found in libraries, according to surveyed librarians”. One of the many reasons this book is banned, sexual content and behavior is the biggest. An example from the book, “I wonder is sex without acid could be so exciting, so wonderful, so indescribable,” Diary entry August 6, pg. 41 of Go Ask Alice. In 2001 it was obtained as an optional reading for 8th graders and a grandmother found it offensive.
Go Ask Alice was also considered banned because of its drug usage. From Diary entry July 13, pg. 35, it reads, “I simple can’t wait to try pot”. In 2004, it was considered challenged for its drug usage. Her diary entries talked about how she felt while on drugs and how much she loved them. In May 1978, “The Library Journal” said a British Colombian School voted 4-3 to ban this book because of Alice’s encouragement to have sex and do drugs. According to an article I read, “In 2009, Go Ask Alice was challenged and later banned at Hanahan Middle School in Berkeley County, SC because of street terms of sex, drug usage, talk of worms eating body parts and explicit language”. But Go Ask Alice also snows what happens if you do drugs and have sex, it ruins your life and on the streets, or like Alice. Suicide. Go Ask Alice needs to be banned from school
