Go Ask Alice was written in 1971 by Beatrice Sparks. Sparks was born on January 15, 1917 and died on May 25, 2012.She was an American therapist and Mormon youth counselor who was known for writing books that were from the real diaries from her patience and from the girls she counseled. It Happened to Nancy(1994), (where a fourteen-year-old girl, was raped and received AIDS from a college boy) and Annie's Baby: The Diary of Anonymous, a Pregnant Teenager, are just a few of Sparks other famous pieces of works.

Alice's diary is an example of personification. Alice talks to her diary as if it is her best friend. on November 10th Alice says “Oh dear Diary, I'm sorry I've neglected you, but I've been so busy. Here we are preparing for Thanksgiving already and then Christmas.” Alice’s is writing to her diary as if the diary is her long time friend that she has not talked to in months. Also she writes on December 10th “ I guess I'm a pretty lousy friend— even to you. Anyway I feel closer to you than I do to even Debbie and Marie and Sharon who are my very best friends.” here, she is stating that the diary is in fact her best friend. Foreshadowing is used to show the path Alice is on after she is introduced to drugs. Which is the root of all of her struggles. On May 14 Alices says “I had a nightmare last night about Gramps' body all filled with maggots and worms, and I thought about what would happen if I should die. Worms don't make distinction under the ground. They wouldn't care that I'm young and that my flesh is solid and firm.” Alice's dreams of maggots and worms in her grandfather, and the dreaming they were all over her is showing her what will happen if she continues down her path. the dream tells her that the drugs she uses will eventually take over her life and she will have no control over the consequences, which will be her
