Go Ask Alice Banned

“Go Ask Alice” is a book of a real teenage girl’s journal. She kept her journal to tell about her life dealing with drugs, sex, and running away from home. The book was claimed to be nonfiction to scare readers straight, but it is actually made up, however, this story could be true (Gershowitz, 2013). “Go Ask Alice” has been banned or challenged many times. When a book is challenged that means that a certain part of the book or parts of the book are considered obscene or a threat to security. “Go Ask Alice” has been challenged many times for different reasons. “Go Ask Alice referenced drugs a lot because the main character was addicted to drugs. “...I'm so, so, so, so, so curious, I simply can't wait to try pot, only once…” The main character was excited about trying pot also known as weed or marijuana. She was so excited to try a new drug she became hooked on the feeling it gave her. “I don't know why I shouldn't use drugs because they're wild and they're beautiful and they're wonderful…(Anonymous, 1971) ” if a 6th-grade student reads this part of the book he or she could possibly have an idea of trying drugs to see if it gives them the feeling it gave the main character. In some middle school health classes drugs are not discussed and taught. Students need to be informed about these drugs and what they could possibly do to them before reading “Go Ask Alice.” “Richie is so good, good, good to me and sex with him is like lightning and rainbows and springtime (Anonymous, 1971).” She describes sex as this amazing thing.
