For years, there has been a serious debate regarding whether genetically modified foods are safe for consumption. Due to this seemingly everlasting controversy came the rise of pro-GMO and anti-GMO groups. To truly understand the severity of the issue, it is important to first understand what exactly a “GMO” is and why it supposedly poses a threat to civilization. In “The Threats from Genetically Modified Foods”, Robin Mather effectively brings awareness to the American public of the harmful side effects of genetically modified (GM) foods. She shares that genetically modified foods are foods with an altered genetic make-up. This alteration has lead them to be banned in several countries. However, in the United States, GM foods are not strictly regulated and, therefore, not required to be labeled. Also, the pesticides used in genetically modified foods yield harmful side effects in animals and humans.…

Though one might argue that the relatively recent developments in the field of GMOs have the inherent risk of unknown negative health consequences, the claimed “ side effects can be described as little more than unsubstantiated. Since their conception in the mid 1990s, GMOs have been extensively studied, with over 1700 peer reviewed studies published between 2003 and 2013 alone. Hundreds of those were independently funded, with no conflict of interest or compensation from the Agriculture Industry. One could also argue that GMOs can, in some cases, be even safer than Organic produce. This is due to the fact that the amount of product testing before a specific strain is allowed to be put on the market is considerably more rigorous in comparison to unmodified organisms.…

In recent years, the outcry of people against genetically modified food, or GM food, has become increasingly prominent in both commercial and governmental practices. GM foods have a negative connotation; people think that eating something that has been modified is going to poison their body. Not only that, but most of the American public believes that in doing this, humans are playing god, and have gone too far. However, none of this is true. Is a great article that goes into detail on the effects of the GMOS after consumption. Previously there was little known about GMOS, because this was something that was slipped in under the radar. Foods are not labeled, and the public has never been outright informed. It was not until other countries outlawed the possibly dangerous foods that we here in the US followed suit, and became curious about investigating what we were eating. There was a controlled experiment set in order, mice of various ages were divided and one group fed GMO products, and the other was fed organic.…
