The World Health Organization, also known as WHO, defines GMOs as “organisms whose DNA has been altered in a non-natural way. GM plants are usually changed to be insect resistant, virus resistant, or herbicide tolerant” (“The Environmental Impact of GMOs”). Some scientists consider GMOs helpful while others consider them harmful. Almost 70% of the foods in our supermarkets contain ingredients that are genetically modified (“WHAT IS A GMO – GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISM”). Most people in this time period don’t even know where the food that they’re eating comes from. For example, “The three main GM crops cultivated in the U.S. are corn, soybeans, and cotton. Most sugar is made from GM sugar beets” (“WHAT IS A GMO – GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISM”). GMOs have only been consumed since the mid-1990s. Therefore, we cannot fully determine whether GMOs cause long- term effects. The debate of whether GMOs (genetically modified organisms) should be grown has spread worldwide. Scientists across the globe are testing the foods and trying to determine the risks. GMOs should not be able to be grown because they harm the environment, they cause health issues, and create viruses that will be difficult to kill in the future.
