GMOs are the fastest growing subject in the history of the agricultural industry. Currently, the United States is the lead producer of GMOs, which are projected to increase in amount and variety in the future (Broeders, De Keersmaecker, Roosens, 2012). As more variations of GMOs are created, the more difficult it is to detect and regulate them. Additional methods of detection must be invented to keep up with the new GMOs created. Some worry whether or not GMOs will be properly scanned and researched. The new SYBR Green screening method provides a possibility for regulation of newest GMO strands (Broeders, De Keersmaecker, Roosens, 2012). These campaigns suggest that because these GMO plants are unnatural, they have not evolved with the rest of mankind, we cannot digest them in a normal way, and they will ultimately harm the environment. In the future, it is believed these issues will only become more problematic (B.M. Chassy, 2007). Additionally, there is a huge risk of the unknown of what GMOs can cause. The main issue of concern by the World Health Organization (WHO) is allergenicity, caused by the mixing of genes (WHO, 2001). Many farmers that want to incorporate GMO crops, are worried for the long-term risk of pollution to the remainder of their crops. Foods produced without GMOs are looked as healthier and safer. While that may not be the truth, more and more Americans are believing it. The world is rapidly changing so it makes sense that technology and agriculture will change with it. GMOs can be used as stockpile food for largely growing populations, especially those in poverty. In the first half of this century alone, global demand for food is expected to grow by about 70 percent (Bones, 2011). The MIT technology review shows that for farmers, the effects of the incoming climate change can be managed, but weather is becoming more unpredictable.
