GMO’s are a diverse group of different plants, animals, and bacteria that all have been engineered in different ways. All GMO’s have been created for a variety of reasons. GMO’s have been getting a lot of speculation as to what are the positives and negatives but the main enquiry is about the effect they have on our health. GMO’s have been entering our food supplies, mainly in the form of plants but there haven’t been many recorded dangers or harmful side effects. Many people are afraid of scientists tampering and modifying their food because they are not fully aware of what GMO’s can do, they think that we are at risk. There have been a few cases of harmful outcomes due to GMO’s, but GMO’s help people in numerous ways. So a question we …show more content…
We have to be careful of what we do with GMO’s. In the USA plant GMO’s have been allowed. In Europe GMO’s are restricted, for example certain GMO’s have been allowed but have to be labelled. One thing for certain is that GMO’s are the future and they have the capability to boost many things, for example the economy. If these crops are becoming more withstandable and better value, in the long run it will help the economy as there will be less wastage and ruined crops. Right now GMO’s cost a lot to produce safely. Firstly they have to be tested on and created through vigorous research. Those processes cost a lot of money so these seeds will be considerably more expensive than regular seeds. With where we are at the moment with GMO’s, it may not benefit the economy because the costs are high, and right now the benefits aren’t equally as high. In the future when GMO’s get more and more popular a problem might occur with small farmers and LIC’s because they won’t have the resources or money to afford to plant GMOs ahead of regular seeds. This could increase the gap even further between rich and poor. Ideally you would hope that GMO’s would help the poorer countries and small farmers, affected by ruined crops, who need the money more than the large TNCs or powerful

In recent years, the outcry of people against genetically modified food, or GM food, has become increasingly prominent in both commercial and governmental practices. GM foods have a negative connotation; people think that eating something that has been modified is going to poison their body. Not only that, but most of the American public believes that in doing this, humans are playing god, and have gone too far. However, none of this is true. So far, none of the GM food currently on the market has any ill-effects on humans.…

People say GMOs have not been tested enough because we are now just hearing about them. However, modern day GMOs have been present since 1996 and George Washington experimented with genetics when he crossed his apple trees. Also, some people say that GMOs hurt the economy because countries will not want to trade with us or have bans on genetic products. Eventually, with the success we have accumulated in GMOs the countries will have to lift restrictions. Countries will not be able to produce enough food for their people or will realize the effects on the environment and will have to play catch up when it comes to GMOs.…

As Africa starts to farm GMOs, the terrible effects such as starvation and malnutrition will start to reduce and possibly disappear. In order to make GMOs accepted in Europe however, there needs to be higher quality proof that they are safe, and there needs to be an abundance of it. GMOs must pass through more stringent testing procedures, and this needs to be known worldwide. Some people are never going to approve of GMOs, so in some cases labeling all GM products may be necessary in certain areas. As African countries are able to choose whether or not to farm GMOs without negative economic consequences, they will start to benefit financially as more food will be available for export.…

A study conducted by the Union of Concerned Scientists concluded that “GMOs do not, on average, increase yields at all” (10 Reasons to Avoid GMOs 2). In fact, they also concluded that “...GMOs have nothing to offer the goals of reducing hunger and poverty, improving nutrition, health and rural livelihoods” (10 Reasons to Avoid GMOs 2). Companies like Monsanto that use GMOs want us to believe that GMOs are safe and part of our future. The position that supports GM crops does not consider the health of consumers in the long-term and how other animals will be affected. For these reasons, I strongly disagree with the use of GMOs.…
