Warning: most of the food you are eating today could be the results of science experiment gone wrong. The American ideals often push us as a society to be bigger, better, and more efficient. These are admirable goals, but have we simply pushed too far? Genetic Modified Organisms (GMO’s) become a prime example, while some argue the ingenuity of them, other might protest the concerning effects. Furthermore, the controversy rises when people discuss whether they should be allowed or how they should be regulated.
Admittedly, Genetic Modified Organisms has been something humans have experimented with for years. Only recently has it shifted its focus from animals to food supplies. It wasn’t until 1982 that the FDA …show more content…
This simply is false. They are now under a microscope of the public eye because now enough time has elapsed for us to begin to see the long term effects. Understandably one of the main concerns that presents itself is allergies. According to the Centers of Disease Control food allergies in children under eighteen years of age went was at 3.4 between the years 1997 and 1999. This rose to 5.1 between the years of 2009 and 2011.(healthline) This increase is alarming, especially for children who are intaking these experiments as they develop and grow. In his books, Seeds of Deception and Genetic Roulette, Jeffrey Smith, head of the Institute for Responsible Technology, states, “Beginning in 1996, genes from bacteria and viruses have been forced into the DNA of soy, corn, cotton, and canola plants, which are used for food. Ohio allergist John Boyles is one of a growing number of experts who believe that these genetically modified (GM) foods are contributing to the huge jump in food allergies in the US, especially among children..” (Porterfield) Everyone has seen parents who insists their kids keep things that don’t belong in their mouths away, but are we simply handing them much worse things inside their …show more content…
GMO’s are prevalent in corn, soy, and wheat, all products that go into most livestock feed. This of course will come right back to us as the animals are sent to slaughter and they wind up on our tables GMO’s and all. A study led by Dr. Judy Carman proved just how harmful these products could be. In the study they separated hundred and sixty eight small piglets after being weaned and gave half of the group food containing a the typical amount of GMO’s and one group food absent of GMO’s. The results of the study were unsettling as the group fed GMO’s developed stomach inflammation, ulcers, and bowel disease. (Carman) The shocking and disturbing information was they were only given small amounts that are found in the normal food, meaning these pigs would have been sent to slaughter and to our local grocery
