There have been many scientific advancements in the recent past, but one of the most impactful and controversial to the agriculture industry is genetic modification. Genetic modification is a time honored tradition that has been a method of breeding for thousands of years. In recent years there have been measurable increases in crop yield, and decrease in pesticide use, solely because of the evolved method of genetic engineering. The products of this technology is known as genetically modified organisms. These GMO’s are surrounded by controversy, and possibility. The beginning of the process of creating a GMO has taken years to critique, but has evolved from methods as simple as cross breeding plants.

This technology is vital to the huge challenge facing the agriculture industry. By 2050, 9 billion people will be on the planet, and agriculturalist have to produce more food on less land. I believe GMOs are a major part in accomplishing that.” World hunger and food insecurity is an issue that many people face today. In the future that is going to be worse because farmers will have to produce more food in the next 50 years then they have all the years before combined. The issue of not having enough food to feed those who are hungry, is only going to get worse as time progresses. There is currently no reliable evidence that food manufactured with genetically modified ingredients are harmful to humans (Bittman 202). GM technology has quite a bit of potential when associated with creating biofuels all the way to creating cures for cancer. A great additive to this, is that after all the years of producing GMOs, there have been no illnesses or harm recorded that is related to the genetic modification. Many countries around the world are in favor of the production of genetic modification and the biotechnology that goes along with it. An example of a country that is Pro-GMO is Canada. Global issues such as droughts, and extremely harsh growing conditions makes it difficult for many growers in other parts of the world to have satisfactory crop yields. In these same parts of the country many children are dying from malnutrition due to lack of nutritional value in the small amounts of commodities they produce. Biotechnology offers a solution for that, creating inventions like “Golden Rice” that provides vitamins for those who are deficient in those areas. Many agriculturalist and researchers believe that this method allows for solving problems that classic plant breeding techniques can not (Grunewald 19-20). Along with providing opportunities for those that are less fortunate, GMOs move towards a more environmental friendly approach to agricultural production. As Bittman said the U.S.D.A have tested these crops and have shown that they require less chemical application, and less need for pesticides, this maintains the soil and waters purity (202). From the perspective of agriculturalist, many believe there is no valid argument against GMOs. Olivia Haigler said it best when she reported “In a survey conducted by Food Manufacturing a couple years ago people were asked if they supported GMOss, then they were asked if they could explain what a GMO is.
