Should Genetically Modified Foods Be Labeled? We have the right to know what is in our food. Worldwide, households have been uneducated about what exactly we feed our bodies. What many people do not consider is the amount of GMO’s processed throughout our daily consumption and what GMO’s even are. GMO’s or Genetically Modified Organisms are living organisms whose genetic make up has been artificially manipulated in a laboratory by genetic engineering. The invasion of GMO’s has only grown more since first introduced in 1996 and will only continue, which is the reason why we should have the privilege of knowing what is in our food we eat daily. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has turned down labeling of GMO foods because the government sees this field as”environmentally safe” (Down to Earth Organic and Natural, 1977). As I mentioned in the introduction that growth in GMO invasion will most likely increase; in 2003 The Grocery Manufacturers Association approximated that 70% to 75% of processed foods contained GMO’s, which leaves almost a sixteen year lead in growth (Down to Earth Organic and Natural, 1977). ABC news took a poll in 2003 that showed, "…huge majorities of Americans favor mandatory labeling — 92 percent for genetically modified foods, and 85 percent for food from farm animals that have been fed hormones or antibiotics.” Followed by the UH survey in 2007 which explained that "…More than 90 percent of those surveyed supported the labeling of GM foods, 68 percent indicated that such labeling was needed, and 50 percent felt that not labeling GM food products was a violation of the consumer’s rights.” Overall, we see that consumers just want truth in the market place with
