GMOs or GM“NO”s? How many times have you seen it- a package that has the label “non-GMO project certified”? How many times have you wondered what GMOs actually are, and what is so bad about them? Chances are the latter has happened many times less than the previous. As Americans, we are constantly being bombarded about what we should and should not be eating, but how do we know what to believe? Genetically modified foods are protested in America, but the real truth behind what they are, what they can do for our economy, their impact on our environment, and how they can affect our health shows that they should be openly accepted. So what in the world are GMOs and why should citizens be open to them? Usually, when Americans hear the phrase …show more content…
This is understandable, but when people are constantly being fed false information, it is hard to know what to believe. One of the biggest lies circulating the country is that GMOs are bad for your body in general. This isn’t true. GMOs are modified to be more nutritious through gene transfer. Scientists have begun adding vitamins and other characteristics to the plant to make it healthier for the consumer. These added traits would not necessarily have a huge impact on the United States, but this technology is useful in poorer nations where micronutrient malnutrition reigns king. These needy countries make up over half of the world. Genetic modification improves the qualities and quantities of these micronutrients in nearly any plant on the face of the earth (Statement on Benefits and Risks of Genetically Modified Foods). For example, in Asia, vitamin A deficiency has grown to become a real issue. Decreased levels of this crucial nutrient has caused blindness in 250,000 to 500,000 malnourished children. What can be done to fix this? GMOs are the answer. Golden rice is genetically modified to provide higher levels of beta-carotene: a nutrient that helps with vitamin A absorption (Windhorst). Genetic modification of plants can produce nutrients in plants that can improve millions of …show more content…
795 million people on this earth do not have enough food to live a healthy lifestyle. This means nearly 1 in 9 people can’t meet their nutrient needs. Poor nutrition causes 45% of the deaths in children under 5 every year. That 's 3.1 million children killed from malnutrition every single year. To completely end world hunger, it would cost $30 billion per year (Hunger Statistics). One key can solve all these issues, and that key is genetic modification. Plants can be given higher yields, better traits for plant growth, and more nutrients for people that need them. It might sound crazy to say that world hunger can all be ended in a lab, but with genetic modification, it truly

A question that’s often asked is; what is a gmo, and how are they made? Scientist often take a gene that controls a desired trait in one plant-- less need for water, so it can survive a drought, for example-- and add it into a different plant. The end result: hardier crops, more colorful berries, even seedless watermelons and grapes (Paturel). One of gmos biggest benefits is certainly their health. Did you know that Vitamin A deficiency has killed 8 million kids in the last 12 years?…

For years, there has been a serious debate regarding whether genetically modified foods are safe for consumption. Due to this seemingly everlasting controversy came the rise of pro-GMO and anti-GMO groups. To truly understand the severity of the issue, it is important to first understand what exactly a “GMO” is and why it supposedly poses a threat to civilization. A Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) is an organism in which “genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially placed into another plant or animal” (Institute for Responsible Technology). Doing so allows for a crop to grow at a higher yield and lower cost.…

GMOs have the potential to do multiple things. For those of you that may not know GMOS (or Genetically modified organisms) are organisms that have been created through gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). They are a safe way to slow down pollution and use less land in crop production. GMOs also provide many health benefits, and could also be a leading cause in ending world hunger. Currently many people are opposing GMOs because GMOs are a relatively young concept, and they believe GMOs only benefit the consumer.…

GMOs can bring a plethora of benefits to almost every industry ranging from medical use to agricultural but is held back by a majority that believes in false accusations and unsupported studies. GMOs have the backing of almost every scientist and person who knows even a little about the subject of biotechnology yet still there is a huge opposition of mainly people who have fallen to Anti-GMO propaganda. In May 2016 the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine issued a report about GMOs saying they “found no substantiated evidence that foods from GE crops were less safe than foods from non-GE crops.”…

However the government assures that GMOs, genetically modified organisms, are not dangerous to consume, but not all civilians are convinced. Therefore, genetically modified foods is a continued controversial issue in the United States and in other countries. Proponents in favor argue that the products of GMOs is an advancement for biotechnology and humanity, while opponents argue that GMOs is inhumane, unnatural…

Genetically Modified Organisms or GMO’s are a huge topic in today’s world. Although GMO’s have been around for the last few decades, it hasn’t been until recently that people are more concerned about the possible negative consequences/effects. GMO’s are organisms that are altered through genetic engineering so the DNA of the organism has one or more new genes when produced. This usually increases the quality and/or quantity of a product/organism and a few other factors. Many people are concerned on whether or not GMOs are actually beneficial for society, and are questioning if big corporations such as Monsanto should continue pushing genetically modified crops and animals to our people.…

Genetically Modified Organisms, or GMOs, have created tension on what is ethical in the food industry. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, GMOs are “genetically engineered foods [that] have had foreign genes inserted into their genetic codes.” Also, many places have found that there are multiple positives and negatives to GMOs, which is why there is such a divide on whether they are healthy to consume. Furthermore, people should know why GMOs are being made, the difference between GMOs and selective breeding, and how genes are chosen and used in GMOs.…

The Truth About GMOs: Persuasive Essay The discussion of genetically modified organisms (or GMOs) can cause quite a heated debate. GMOs are created by a process called genetic engineering, also known as genetic modification. During this laboratory process, the DNA of one species is removed and then added to the genetic makeup of another species (Smith, GMO Education). GMOs can supposedly increase yield, produce herbicide/insecticide tolerant crops, and in some instances they have benefited third world countries.…

Another positive claim that comes from these genetically modified crops is that they can sustain pesticides better than non gmo crops, and therefore less pesticide has to be used; but these crops have actually caused more pesticides to be used in crops after they began to be modified, and that is because insects are always adapting to the new substances and plants that are…
