A Brief Note On The Pros And Cons Of Genetically Modified Foods

Improved Essays
Did you know that over 90% of soy, cotton, canola, corn, and sugar beets sold in the United States have been genetically engineered. The most common thing that is different in the genetically engineered versions is they are resistant to to pests. They are either modified to produce a pesticide in their tissues or they are are modified to be resistant to a pesticide like Roundup. Other ways GM plants can be engineered is drought tolerance, disease resistance, be more nutritious, be resistant to hot and cold, and many other traits. Even though there are some pros to GMO 's there are also bad effects. Because of recent advance in technology, GM foods are easier than ever to create but do the negatives outweigh the benefits they can have? (Lallanilla) …show more content…
People that normally would not be allergic to the non GM food could be allergic to the genetically modified version because scientists insert genes from other organisms. The new gene in a crop like soy, produces a new protein that has never existed before. Since the farmers can spay more herbicide on GM crops, the increase in the chemical residues could cause health problems. “The only definitive test for allergies,” according to former FDA microbiologist Louis Pribyl, “is human consumption by affected peoples, which can have ethical considerations.” Do we really want to be the testers of the safety of GM food without knowing if we are even eating it. The UK is one of the few countries that does annual evaluations of food allergies. In 1999 soy allergies had gone up by 50% from the previous year. This happened soon after GM soy was introduced to the UK. Based on these results GM foods could be contributing the increasing number of allergies. …show more content…
Without bees we will not have any honey or pollination from them. Without pollination many most are not able to grow and reproduce. Farmers used 318 million pounds more pesticides since GM crops were introduced. All of the pesticides are bad for the environment because they kill both the bad and good insects. Since farmers can use a lot more pesticides than they could without GM crops, insects can become resistant to them creating super insects that can not be killed without a stronger pesticide that will cause even more damage to the environment and crops.

GM crops pose threats to the crops of nearby non-GMO farmers. Pollen can drift from the GM from to a nearby non-GMO crop and infecting it. This makes it even harder for farmers who try to make sure to do the right thing the make a profit. The farmers would not even know if their crop was infected because the only way to tell is chemical analysis. This means that farmers could be selling crops that they say are non-GMO but really aren 't. This could get the farmers in a lawsuit over false advertising and somehow someone found out or was genetically

Moving on to my position on this topic, I would like to point out, although many of these concerns mentioned by IRT are understandable, they are due to misinformation and, therefore, are not true. Firstly, GM crops are usually no different from conventional crops, as stated by The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but they can be healthier through the modification process. As a co-author in the paper “The application of GMOs in agriculture and in food production for a better nutrition: two different scientific points of view” (2013), Paul Christou points out, “one of the important benefits of transgenic crops is the ability to generate more nutritious varieties” (266). Second generation GMOs involve the insertion of genes to make the plant have a greater…

Ever since Monsanto introduced its Roundup Ready seed in the 1990’s there has been a big debate about whether they are safe and do the advantages of the outweigh the disadvantages. It has been proven in over 2000 independent studies that GMO’s are in fact safe according to the “Genetic Literacy Project”. It is evident by now that not only are the GM crops safe, but save labor, money, and produce higher quality higher yielding plants. The accusation that genetic modifying has not been around long enough for us to fully understand it is ridiculous.…

Even though tests have only really been done to animals and the effects are bad you can only imagine how bad our results will be for humans. Knowing the true results while testing these animals that alone demonstrates why GMO’s can lead to serious health problems. Not only does it affect many bodily parts but it also effects your lifespan. A GM plant could theoretically contain lower nutritional quality that its traditional counterpart by making nutrients unavailable or indigestible to humans.…

While GMOs contain many positive attributes, the consumption of these genetically altered organisms proves to be quite dangerous. These frankenfoods can be crops or animals, which is quite scary when looked at from the consumer 's view. Not to mention terrifying to people with food allergies. Tests have shown these mutant foods to have serious or fatal side effects after consumption. If many tests have proven GMOs to be dangerous, then they should not be…

Humans have a natural tendency to prefer perfection and to judge by looks. If one tomato looks more red and round than another, that’s the one that will be selected at the supermarket. However, in this case, judging by good looks instead of quality is to the buyer’s disadvantage. Much of the food in America has been genetically modified to look and feel perfect, yet there are many risks that come along with it. While they may look pretty, genetically modified organisms carry major health risks, have harsh impact on the environment, and have significant impact in the production of corn which is one of America’s unhealthiest crops.…

Genetically modified crops and herbicides used to grow them harm animals and ecosystems. For instance, GMOs reduce “biodiversity, pollute water resources, and are unsustainable” (10 Reasons to Avoid GMOs 2). One example is the 50% population drop of monarch butterflies in the US. Research shows that this is because of the use of the Roundup herbicide. Because of GM crop seeds cross pollination, farmers who choose to grow organic and non-GMO crops “struggle to keep their crops pure” (10 Reasons to Avoid GMOs 1).…

In 1992, “…Calgene’s Flavr Savr tomato became the first food crop approved for commercial production by the U.S. Department of Agriculture” (Rangel). With regards to time, this means that within the past 30 years GMOs have gone from the science table to the consumer’s table. The FDA nor the USDA test the safety of GE foods. As FDA spokesperson Theresa Eisenman has said, “It is the manufacturer’s responsibility to ensure that the [GMO] food products it offers for sale are safe…” (Ruskin). Meaning, the companies producing GM products also seem to be the ones proving their safety; this comes across as a conflict of interest.…

GM foods also create an essential sustainable way to feed the world. Another pro is that some GMO foods have been modified to make them more resistant to insect pests. The University of California reports that a (Toxic Bacterium) can be added to a crops genetics to make them insect resistant, and safe for human use at the same time. This can reduce the amount of pesticide chemicals used on the plants, thus potentially reducing exposure to…

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, scientists working to add more nutrients to these modified crops may accidentally cause antinutritional factors such as allergens to arise in the new crop. An example of this is in a generation of the golden rice there was an increase in the protein prolamin, which can be an allergen. This is a risk because although they may be adding more nutrients, more people may be having adverse reactions towards it. Another risk is that some farmers are worried that pollen from fields growing GM crops may be carried by the wind and pollinating their non-GM crops.…

Food hunger is a big problem in today 's world because of our tremendously high population, but the lack of food production is not the only problem that causes these things; other factors such as food waste, poverty and many other factors are causing huge impact to the world (Global food crisis). Another positive claim that comes from these genetically modified crops is that they can sustain pesticides better than non gmo crops, and therefore less pesticide has to be used; but these crops have actually caused more pesticides to be used in crops after they began to be modified, and that is because insects are always adapting to the new substances and plants that are…
