Gluten-free: Popular trend or Essential diet Recently in the past few years, gluten-related disorders have received a lot of attention in in the press and social media (Allen 2015). The sale of gluten-free foods and products has become highly requested making it a multibillion dollar business (Allen 2015). Some people have chosen to go in this diet because of health issues, such as celiac disease or gluten sensitivity allergies. There are also a lot more people who are following into this diet without needing to because of the hyped benefits that it could give. For a person who has no gluten sensitivity, I think removing gluten from your diet is unnecessary, since it will not impact your health in an overly significant way, if at all.

This disease is diagnosed by using serologic test or tTG-IgA test, which both basically test the blood to find out the results (Fasano & Catassi 2012). Some of the symptoms that someone can experience after consuming gluten are diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss or weight gain and anemia (Allen 2015). The long term consequences include osteoporosis, anemia and even possible bowel cancer (The Guardian 2015). It is vital for people with Celiac disease to avoid those types of foods, since it can be extremely upsetting and painful (The Guardian 2015). The most effective treatment for this would be to follow a strict gluten-free diet for life; there is not a way to completely eliminate the problem (Fasano & Catassi
