The glowstick is a short term light source and it can last for seconds,minutes,and hours, or days.It does not need external energy to run it.The glow stick has two main sources that help it glow, diphenyl oxalate and hydrogen peroxide. When the inner tube is broken the peroxide mixes with the oxalate and the dye, and causes a chemical reaction this is called chemiluminescence.
The glow stick has two parts to it, one is the outer tube to hold everything in, the second part is the glass tube in the inside with the chemicals to make it glow. The most things people like about glowsticks is the fact that they don't produce heat. These types of lights are called luminescence, lightning bugs are another source of luminescence.
