Gloria Marie Steinem is an American feminist, journalist, and social and political and social activist who accomplished many things throughout her lifetime. Gloria became nationally recognized for her leadership in the “second-wave feminist movement” during the late 60s and early 70s. She began her career for New York magazine as a columnist before becoming a founder of Ms. magazine, a publication dedicated to women’s rights and concerns. Over the course of her life, Steinem continues to work as writer, touring lecturer, and political commentator on progressive social issues (W. 2016). Gloria was also the founding president of the Ms. Foundation for women and helped in creating the Take Our Daughters to Work Day. In recent years, she was apart of co-founding the Women’s Media Center and GreenStone Media. Also, she published a collection of essays called Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions (1983) and Moving Beyond Words: Age, Rage, Sex, Power, Money, Muscles: Breaking the Boundaries of Gender (1994); Revolution from Within (1992), a work on self-esteem for women; and the memoir My Life on the Road (2015). Her first book, Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions included her recollections of the past such as her expose undercover as a playboy bunny. . . it seems like Miss Gloria has done it all. I am so blown away by all of her accomplishments I could write a novel about her and all she has done for the progress of equality. I am fairly new to feminism as I’ve only truly known what it means for a little over a year. This woman gives me hope. She reminds me why feminism is so incredibly important in our society. She continued her entire life to break those social barriers of our society. The barriers that I feel our generation has stopped trying to do. As I was looking for a woman to write about I saw many inspiring woman that have existed throughout history, but Gloria really sparked my interest. I am at a point in my life where I am starting to think critically about our society and I’m beginning to ask questions as to why things are the way that they are. Gloria helped answer some of these questions. I think a majority of our generation is one of two things: afraid or clueless. I know before I took an intro to women studies class I had absolutely no idea what feminism even was, but honestly does that word even really matter? I feel like Gloria didn’t start out thinking “Okay, now I am a feminist so I need to do feminist things”. No, she fought for what she thought was right and the feminist part came with that.
