Socialization Influence On Puppets

Are we similar to puppets? A puppet is someone or something under the control of another person or influenced. Like a puppet, we as well follow and learn by what we see and are taught by others. Socialization is a process that starts at birth and is never ending. Throughout that lifespan, a person encounters with people or things who become major socialization influences in his life. The most important socialization influences I have encountered are my parents and education. My parents taught me the Indian customs and education taught me the American customs. Parents are the first socialization influence in a child’s life. An article based on academic socialization says, “The process by which parents shape a child’s behaviors, attitudes, and social skills so that the child will be able to function as a member of society is broadly encompassed by the term socialization.” As the child is growing up, parents are the ones to teach him right from wrong. Whereas, American culture tends to put more focus on the individual. This is the dilemma I’ve been living in. At school, I am the outspoken, open-minded, and independent girl. At home, I am the quiet, graceful, and focused girl. Both cultures have been important socializing influences that define me, and trying to find a balance between the two is difficult but not impossible. I am grateful that my parents have accepted the fact that I am an American Indian. I will be outspoken when necessary but I can be very quiet too. At home, they will always be able teach me about the Indian culture, traditions, and values. At school, I will be learning about the American culture, traditions, and values. The environment at home and the environment at school are two different worlds. I will always keep learning new things and trying to fit into both
