The latest change in the Earth’s atmosphere is a significant one; scientists call it “global climate change”, less accurately known as “global warming”. The scientific definition of global climate change is the increase in the Earth 's average surface temperature due to greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels or from deforestation, which traps heat that would otherwise escape from the Earth (cotf.edu). The biggest effect of the carbon in the atmosphere is the change in weather patterns. Humans, by putting the carbon in the air, have been causing the atmosphere to rain less or more in some areas of the planet; it also causes varying weather patterns. Recent climate tests have shown that reducing the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would give the Earth a wetter climate in the short term in some areas (cotf.edu). Other areas of the Earth have been getting more rain than is usual for them during the summer. This is due to carbon dioxide causing the Earth 's average air temperature to increase and higher temperatures cause particles in the Earth 's atmosphere to move more. This movement creates more energy in the atmosphere and causes air and water to move around the planet, the greater the amount of energy in Earth’s atmosphere, the more severe the weather. This is, by far, the hardest evidence to analyze, since there are multiple routes to take to remedy the atmosphere issue at hand. There are other routes we can take to obtain energy, such as wind and solar power. Wind and solar power is a relatively new idea to use instead of fossil fuels. These energy sources can potentially provide enough energy to supply the whole country enough on a daily basis. Solar panels are already available for anyone to put on their houses or office buildings to supply energy to their businesses or households. There are other ways humans are creating to alleviate the carbon problem. One of these ways is by using different energy sources for vehicles. Scientists at Massachusetts Institute of Technology are working on creating vehicles that run on liquid hydrogen gas. “Many people think that fuel-efficient vehicles like hydrogen-powered cars will be crucial in meeting the energy demands of the 21st century…What makes a hydrogen car possible is a device called a fuel cell, which converts hydrogen to electricity, giving off only heat and water as byproducts” (howstuffworks.com). Although these cars are years ahead of their time, this will be one way that humans can change their habits to help to help the environment.
