Methane can naturally be found in the soil, the seafloor or the earth surface. Methane is not necessarily a threat to the atmosphere, since it is a natural gas, but if mixed with other chemical components or if burned it can release more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, for example landfills and coal mines. So there is no one definitive solution to stopping global warming, but only practical measures to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide release into the earth. In 1997 the leader of the world community gathered to sign a treaty call the Kyoto Protocol, which would stop the use of greenhouse gases. The treaty took effect on February, 16 2005 and even though most countries have not agreed to sign, the Kyoto is still working to target those countries to come into terms.
