Dear editor, I think that the United States ,Thomas Jefferson, and Congress should buy the Louisiana territory because not only would we get New Orleans and we would get the Louisiana territory which has the Mississippi River. First of all if we buy the Louisiana Territory we would have way more land. It says that there is over half of the U.S. in this purchase. Why would Thomas Jefferson not buy it, who cares if it's not constitutional! I Shirley wouldn't.…
Southwest Louisiana is characterized by extensive coastal marshland interrupted by numerous forests atop relict beach ridges, or chenier ridges, and natural ridges or levees. The cheniers of southwest Louisiana and the natural ridges of southeast Louisiana are unique geological features that are critical components of the ecology of these areas. They support a diversity of wildlife and, because of their location along important migration pathways, are especially important for Neotropical migratory songbirds. Available long term data sets reveal population declines among many migratory landbirds species over the past quarter century ().…
Katrina V. Harvey Hurricane Katrina and Harvey were very different yet alike, Including their: category, location, time and effects. Hurricanes can be very destructive or hardly do anything and be brushed off. Katrina and Harvey were destructive hurricanes and will be documented in history as examples of what not to do in preparation for hurricanes. Hurricanes are very unpredictable but they all almost end the same way, being very destructive.…
I moved to Yuba City, California approximately twelve years ago and have lived there ever since. I chose to analyze the climate trends of Yuba City because, even though I may move away soon after graduating college, it is where my parents will continue to live and I would like to have an idea of future climate changes in their city. Yuba City is a fairly small town in Sutter County with a population of 65,416 people (United States Census, 2013). It is located on the Feather River 45 miles north of Sacramento at latitude: 39.140 and longitude: -121.617 (LatLong.net, 2015). It was founded in 1849, established as a distribution center for supplying the Gold Rush 49ers (Yuba City, 2000a).…
New Orleans is a major United States port and largest city and metropolitan area in the state of Louisiana. The city is named after the Duke of Orleans, who reigned as Regent for Louis XV from 1715 to 1723. It was established by French colonists and strongly influence by their European culture. Before the mid-20th century, New Orleans was one of the largest port in the nation, with continued expanding in population (“Wikipedia”). It is well known for its distinct French and Spanish Creole architecture, and its cross-cultural and multilingual heritage.…
Louisiana has faced many environmental problems throughout its history. Problems such as shoreline loss, wetlands being destroyed, and oceanic life dying. These problems are because of Hurricane Katrina, human population density, and the oil spill. The hurricane wiped out the region’s shoreline and the oil spill killed many of the oceanic life in the Gulf of Mexico. According to Marquina (2015), a storm like Hurricane Katrina was a natural disaster waiting to happen for the state of Louisiana.…
Because of rising global temperatures, people all over the planet are plagued by rising sea levels, melting Arctic sea ice, melting glaciers and permafrost, rising sea-surface temperatures, warming lake temperatures, heavier rainfall causing flooding, extreme drought increasing, withering crops, changing ecosystems, changes in the frequency and strength of hurricanes, human health being affected by warmer temperatures, and sea water becoming more acidic. So how does this affect Las Vegas and Clark County? First, Clark County is located in the Mojave Desert, and has a subtropical desert climate. Second, Lake Mead is located in Clark County and is a major source of water supply not only for Nevada, but also for Southern California and Arizona.…
There are plenty of factors that bring a rise to the problem of coastal degradation. For instance, harsh weather effects, deadly toxins, and even human interaction cause a rapid decline of the land. In the state of Louisiana, these situations are a deadly effect on its' coastline. Aside from these ongoing, or seasonal effects, a new threat has entered the group, and it goes by the name of the Nipponaclerda biwakoensis, or commonly known as 'the scale'.…
Louisiana Costal Wetlands: Save the Big Easy Across the United States, there are over six million acres of wetland, that shelter countless species of fish, birds, and animals. The nation’s largest coastal wetlands are located in the southern part of the country along the entire Louisiana shoreline. “Louisiana wetland is the perfect habitat for oysters, shrimp, crabs and home to the most abundant fisheries in the world. Louisiana accounts for about thirty percent of the countries’ seafood harvest; providing jobs to thousands of men and women.…
Hurricane Katrina “It’s looking better for New Orleans, and the very worst for the Gulfport area.” After hearing that, I said to everyone, “I want you to forgive me now, because I think I made a mistake. I’m afraid we’re all going to have to fight very hard not to die.” Hurricane Katrina was a hurricane that hit the gulf coast of the United States in 2005.…
Growing up in Louisiana has been a part of my life. Before moving back to Virginia in the 7th grade, we resided in Louisiana for about 7 years. We would travel to New Orleans very often for various sporting events that my siblings and I would participate in or we would go to watch the New Orleans Saints or the New Orleans Pelicans play. New Orleans has so much to offer that for all ages. Many people may think that New Orleans is only for adults but there are some kid-friendly things to do.…
The year was 2005, it seems like it wasn’t that long ago , but it has been nearly 11 years since the natural disaster named Hurricane Katrina came through and devastated the city of New Orleans. The Hurricane Katrina aftermath left 80% of the city underwater and 25,000 thousands of people displaced, stranded and in despair seeking refuge inside the Louisiana Super Dome. More than 1500 people died after the levees broke letting water from the Mississippi River flood most of the city. Nearly seventy-one billion dollars in funds has been spent to help the people of New Orleans with the recovery process. My stance is in opposition of the process of these recovery efforts that have taken place.…
Danny Glover once stated, “When Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf and the floodwaters rose and tore through New Orleans, it did not turn the region into a Third World country…it revealed one” (Glover). In the wake of this darkness, Hurricane Katrina proved to America that as a nation, there was no way to prepare for a disaster of this size. As the winds raged on and the waters crashed against the coast, ultimately drowning out around 80% of the state, Hurricane Katrina proved to be more than just a category five hurricane, proving to be historical, holding a position of the third deadliest hurricane that has affected the United States of America. Three reasons Hurricane Katrina proved unpreparedness were; The New Orleans levee system was…
The end of August 2005 is a period of time that many along the entire Gulf Coast area will never forget. Hurricane Katrina, even ten years later, is one of the most catastrophic natural disasters in United States history. Despite the awareness and preparation that is afforded when anticipating a hurricane, the Gulf Coast was severely devastated when the storm made landfall on August 29, 2005. Although there was widespread destruction, the region most decimated by the hurricane was New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina not only left the entire city underwater, it left thousands of people homeless, displaced, or dead.…
