Accepting that there is a problem is the first step toward a path of recovery. For many years, the issue of global warming has been debated and every last piece of information has been presented. In midst of all this debate, it seems as though every single member of society has formulated their own opinion of this issue primarily based on biased media coverage as opposed to any research of their own. In his film, An Inconvenient Truth, filmmaker Davis Guggenheim decides to dilute the negative effects of misleading media coverage by following long time global rights activist, Al Gore, on the lecture circuit. Guggenheim is able to present the content of the film in a way which keeps the mood light, thus making the audience more open to his message. In one instance of the film, Al Gore states, “I’m Al Gore. I used to be the next President of the United States” (Guggenheim). By providing comic relief within the film, Guggenheim is able to make his audience more acceptant of his message of the existence and immediacy surrounding global warming. It is easy for individuals to stop listening to things that they do not want to hear. By balancing rather serious information with lighter moments of relief, Guggenheim is able to more effectively and persuasively argue his claim. In addition to keeping the audience from becoming too tense or serious, Guggenheim also uses humor to detract from the viewpoints of global warming adversaries. When Al Gore acknowledges the skeptics of global warming in An Inconvenient Truth, he mocks them. When he talks about the people who believe that this warming in the Earth’s temperature is just temporary, like the one during medieval times, he makes a joke about the huge difference between that warming and this one (Guggenheim). By making the opposition’s views comical, he points to the absurdities regarding such an uninformed and ignorant opinion. In this way, he discredits the opposition while making his claim about Global Warming and the urgency surrounding it more
