Definition of Global Warming Global warming is the effect of the rising of earth’s temperature. Earth’s temperature begins with the Sun. Roughly 30 percent of incoming sunlight is reflected back into space by bright surfaces like clouds and ice. Of the remaining 70 percent, most is absorbed by the land and ocean, and the rest is absorbed by the atmosphere. The absorbed solar energy heats our planet (1). When the energy is absorbed, it creates heaters that heat the atmosphere and the surface. Scientist are concerned because over the past two hundred years, since the industrial revolution, humans have participated in the increase of artificially raising the number of gases in the greenhouse.

Since the Industrial Revolution began in about 1750, carbon dioxide levels have increased nearly 38 percent as of 2009 and methane levels have increased 148 percent (2).

The Causes of Global Warming
Carbon Dioxide is a result of the burning of fuel, gases, coal, and anything used for energy. There are many influences to the global warming rise, but carbon dioxide has the most significant effect according to the Union of Concerned Scientists. CO2 remains in the atmosphere longer than the other major heat-trapping gases emitted as a result of human activities. It takes about a decade for methane (CH4) emissions to leave the atmosphere (it converts into CO2) and…
