Global Warming (Processes in Disposable Diaper Lifecycle)
The previous LCA analysis mentioned the contribution that diapers and their production place on the environment. It was noted that the emission of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) in diaper production was one of the top 3 environmental indicators. The biodegrading of diapers (pulp) and packaging also contributed to global warming. A direct impact to the pulp and paper industry, where most diapers are produced, are carbon taxes. Carbon taxes either tax GHG emissions directly or a charge is placed on the fuels that release the carbon content. Energy generation in a diaper production facility holds a large contribution to global warming. Hoel and Keverndokk state that “70-75% of all CO2 emissions is due to combustion of fossil fuels” (1996, p.116). It is also important to analyze how the life cycle of a diaper product (pulp & paper mills and diaper manufacturing) surges global warming problems, in order to make changes and improve the value of the product for its consumers. Carbon Tax to Impact Paper Mills
Only select countries have imposed a carbon tax to control or reduce Greenhouse emissions. Yet, as a higher concentration of the emissions is anticipated, such penalty is a potential concern. It will directly impact a diaper manufacturer’s fossil fuels and electricity purchased costs. “The future potential for relatively expensive carbon taxes and other forms of penalty affects owners’ decisions today on which assets to…
