Over the past 100 years, global warming has become known as one of the biggest problems facing the world. Global warming is caused by what is known as the greenhouse effect. To start, what is the greenhouse effect? Well it’s defined as the process when radiation from a planet’s atmosphere warms the planet’s surface to temperatures higher than what it would be without the atmosphere. The sun’s rays are sent down towards the earth and they heat the surface and then the rays bounce back towards space. This isn’t a problem without an atmosphere, but earth’s is so thick it causes the rays to then bounce back off of the atmosphere and then hit the earth again. This happens over and over and drastically heats the earth us. This has caused earth’s average global temperature to increase by 1.4 degrees since 1880. Also of the 10 warmest years ever recorded, 9 other have occurred in the 2000’s.
The reason that our atmosphere is so thick and due to the immense use of what are known as greenhouse gases. There are many greenhouse gases, but the main ones are methane, carbon dioxide and Nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide is the least of the three, but still has a huge impact on the atmosphere. Nitrous oxide is extremely devastating and 1 pound of it is 300 times worse than 1 pound of Carbon dioxide. Luckily it isn’t greatly as produced as the other 2 but still makes up for over 6% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the US. Nitrous oxide is release into the atmosphere from vehicles burning fuel…
