Global Leadership Self-Analysis

Global Leadership was an interesting course, as well as a bit of a revelation. Starting by taking the CQ Assessment, I realized I was not as ‘diverse’ as I thought. As I read the chapters, I found the amount of research behind Global Leadership is needed and beneficial for companies operating globally. Operating cross-culturally takes more than just opening shop in other countries; there are many facets of the culture to take into consideration to be successful. In addition, hiring leadership for these offices is not as simple as putting a warm body in an office. There are many traits required, and what I found interesting, is that personality is truly an important attribute to consider. Equally important to understand is that traits typically …show more content…
CQ-Knowledge was one of my lowest scores, so there is definitely an opportunity for me to better understand others value and social norms, along with leadership ideas. As indicated in the book The Cultural Intelligence Difference, I can create my own CQ Action Plan, as an effort to improve my CQ. I know I can improve; my highest score was in the Drive category. I am open and motivated to learning about other cultures. In the past, I lived in big cities with many opportunities to interact with other cultures, but since I now live in a small town, the prospects for interactions are a lot lower. For immediate improvement, I plan to learn about the cultural identities and values of our foreign partners, this is information I can use during conference calls, web-cam conference calls, and E-mails. There are growth opportunities in all aspects of work from my level, to management, to our …show more content…
This includes how to treat employees, the ability to be flexible by understanding their cultures such as holidays, and religious requirements. In addition, it is important to understand the proper way to reach customers and the correct way to conduct business with shareholders. I imagine due to technological advancements, we will see continued studies conducted in the understanding of what makes a global leader. Some researchers believe we do not need one meaning, while others feel not having one agreed upon term, leaves uncertainty for those in leadership roles. Although there are various definitions of the term, and research continues to try and better define a global leader, I imagine it will always be a dynamic definition as our times continue to

I have learned in this class that part of being an effective leader is realizing that everyone is different. The differences between us are not right or wrong, they are simply different. In class we talked about Triandis and how there are tight and loose cultures. As a leader, I need to keep in mind that depending on the culture my followers will influence what they expect of me as their leader. In addition, it is important to validate each culture represented in a workplace.…

Leadership Style Self-Assessment 1 After taking the style questionnaire during while studying the Leadership Grid in Northouse; as expected, I found that my leadership style varies, although of the three theories discussed, more closely relates to team leadership. My assessment found my strengths to be with authority compliance (9,1) and team management (9,9). As suggested by Northouse (2012), “The 9,1 style of leadership places heavy emphasis on task and job requirements, and less emphasis on people, except to the extent that people are tools for getting the job done” (p. 79). The Team Management style is based on tasks and relationships. I consider myself more tasks orientated and analytical, while spending less time with my subordinates’ personal issues.…

Leadership, a term used by many to describe the action of leading a group of people or an organization, but leadership within the community through the youth holds a much larger role in modern society. Martin Luther King Jr. describes the importance of communal leadership saying, “life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘what are you doing for others?.” I believe that leadership is not necessarily wielding authority but it is crucial to empowering members within the society to work together to solve many problems we face. By being a part of the Peer Acceptance Leadership Skills (PALS) program, I believe it is the necessary link between connecting high school youth to the community to help empower those who with disabilities, those who…

Global leaders faced many challenges today. In my opinion, the most important challenge is the global economy. As many of us know many countries are struggling economically and this could a big struggle for many global leaders. If the economy is no steady for those investing countries, it would be hard for the leaders with a strong economy to maintain a solid relationship with the countries that are not doing so well. Another challenge that global leaders faced is maintaining a good communication with the other leaders.…

Where a global leader is an influencer of the processes of individuals, groups, and organisations who are part of any number of diverse systems, but who are working towards the organisation 's overreaching goals (Beechler & Javidan, 2007). The GLOBE 's interdisciplinary empirical-based theory project found that some leadership attributes occur in effective leaders across cultures, while others are culturally contingent (House et al., 2002, 2004), suggesting that to some degree an effective leader is effective irrelevant of their organisation 's globalisation. However, the limitations of the empirical evidence lead to a split in beliefs about the relationship between effectiveness and global leadership, that is convergence and divergence hypotheses. Gentry and colleagues (& Sparks, 2012; et al., 2014) investigated global leadership in terms of operalisation and found support for the convergence hypothesis, that is that some leadership attributes are more effective across cultural settings. However, building on this work Takahashi, Ishikawa, and Kanai (2012) suggest that a Western framework of leadership is highly limiting from a global perspective, and Inceoglu and Bartram (2012) suggest that instead a boarder scope of multi-cultural context is needed for global leaders to be highly…

There are many different types of leaders – local leaders, national leaders, and global leaders. In order to become a strong global leader, it is vital to experience the importance of being a local leader. There is a difference in being a leader and a good leader. I believe that being a good leader starts at the local level in order to build a strong foundation. You can be a leader, but if you are unable to gain the respect of everyone around you or if no one listens to you, you can have the title, but it would be fruitless.…
