Leadership development has taken a drastic change in the past few years, going from a local usually more western theory to a new global perspective. As more global companies emerge the search for global leader’s increase, with the main concept requirement being a global mindset. Due to the shortage of fitted applicants many companies are focusing on developing their own global leaders. These programs have to focus on a few different aspects including competencies, timing, methods, values, experience, diversity, and behavior which will be discussed in detail. Global leadership development must first start with “identification of high-potential leaders”. (Briscoe, Dennis; Schuler, Randall; Tarique, Ibraiz 2012

One benefit of being able to identify leaders as they begin their careers is that you are able to choose the ones that have studied these methods in their Bachelor degrees and are now ready to practice. Companies can identify their high potential leaders and create a leadership development program that provides the needed mentors and challenges. After candidates have successfully completed this program, companies should also look to invest in sending these individuals to earn their MBA or create an in-house MBA that may be more affordable than the risky investment of sending them to a university. The behaviors of a candidate matter and can be changed depending on the qualities of the person. Development of a great attitude that not only is able to connect with an employee but also communicate at a high level of understanding and friendliness. One key item for global leadership is that sympathy and friendliness are appreciated in all cultures. Other behaviors that many global leaders have are related to the way they perform in different situations and are linked to leadership effectiveness in a global environment. One key behavior that leads to effectiveness is having a mentor and coach that can instill the need to be effective and that can guide you in the right direction when in need. Lastly, while global leaders may have great coaches and mentors they must understand that what they receive they have to pass along and develop other great global leaders, if one is not willing to do that, they will not be a successful global leader in the
