Within chapter 4; there is a photo of very well known, uncle Sam; who is basically the American poster child for patriotism, peaking in the first two world wars. He is standing between America and the Mexican boarder, holding a 2 signs which highly contradict themselves. In one hand uncle Sam is asking for help but on the other hand, he is stating illegal immigration should be banned. Similarly, in the political cartoon by Paul Szep; he has a photo of uncle Sam ironically saying “uncle Sam does not want illegal immigrants…wink wink, only kidding.” Although, both of these images, show a two-fold perspective on immigration between Mexico and the United States, it is a wider spread issue, all over the world. Patriotism is defined as the “The act or being patriotic; love of or devotion to one’s country” (Oxford English Dictionary n.1). Similarly, in both cartoons, they are using figures of patriosm. Although America may put on the face that they do not want illegal immigrants and want to put a stop to it immediately. There is always the underlying known message, shown in this cartoon, that potentially they do want illegal immigration for certain reasons. Similar to the American struggle with this problem, as shown in these photos. Canada also has to the deal with this.
