Majority of the slaves did agricultural labor on the plantation. These slaves would be raped, beaten, and theif family could be sold away from them. They would work long hours throughout the day in the hot sun. Slavery in America was based on race. “Ashworth argues that slavery was an inferior form of social labor to capitalism because of the slaves’ continuous resistance to their unfree legal status” . The author is saying how, the slaves would refuse to commit to being a slave, and this type of labor that slaves took part of was the lowest of the low. Slavery began in the 17th century. “Slavery in America began when the first African slaves were brought to the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619, to aid in the production of such lucrative crops as tobacco” . With the help of these African Americans the economy then started to grow with their free labor. Also after the cotton gin was created this made it more essential to have slaves and especially in the south . Cotton gin was a machine that was used to separate cotton from the seeds. The south basically depended on agricultural labor. On the other hand, the North had well established industry and manufacturing so slaves weren’t needed as much as they were in the South. Slavery was an unfair and unjust ideology that has been around for way too long and is still going on around the world today. Slavery always ends up causing more harm than was intended. We see that in Russia, landlords did not own slaves but they practiced serfdom, and this was the policy of giving a serf land, and they had to contribute for that landowner but they were not slaves they were just considered part of the property. Fast forwarding, we see that an Emancipation was created which made serfs free but there were a lot of downsides to the Emancipation which led to ultimate failure of the Emancipation. In America, the slaves that were in the south were treated badly, and were forced to do agricultural work and work long hours. The expansion of slavery led to the Civil War which was a war against the North and the South of America. After the war the 14th and the 15th Amendment were created which established equal rights. Lastly, in the Caribbean, the institution of slavery led to a revolt in Saint Domingue. After this revolt, and many other events that preceded, the slave rebels claimed an independent state and called it Haiti.
