I am here today to tell you that current global food production will be unable to meet the demands of the rapidly rising global population. Millions all around the world today are undernourished and starving. Millions of people a year die from starvation in areas like Africa and Asia due to poor food security. The world population is rapidly rising about 200,000 people each day, which adds up to 70 million people each year. This will put more of a stress on every countries food security, no matter where they are on the map, or if they are a third world country or not.
The reason for this rapid incline in population over the last few hundred years is that couples are having an amount of children that is above the replacement level. The replacement level would be 2.1 children per couple to sustain and slowly grow the Earth’s population. The average children per couple number has come down over the years to around 3 children currently. But with around half the world’s population under 24 years of age, in the next decade or so, there will be an even greater incline on population. People are also living longer than the estimated life expectancy, unbalancing the birth to death ratio which currently stands at 5 births to 2 deaths. …show more content…
Places with high food security include; Europe, North America and Australia. In places with already low food security, the severe increase in population would mean that food would become more expensive and scarce, increasing the death toll due to starvation. In places with high food security, food prices will rise due to the increase for demand for food and there being not enough food. Some people may not be able to afford food, lowering the food security of that country. According to the Population Reference Guru, “demand for food is projected to double by 2030 and 20 percent of that increase is attributed to population
