Family values are a vital part of establishing a foundation, influencing decision making, providing guidance, and resisting outside influences. Throughout my life, my family has impressed values such as loyalty, honesty, support, hard work, respect, trust, humility, and love into me. When a family goes through change and faces trials such as new jobs and sickness, key values like support, love and trust are brought out.

We had never done this before, so my brother and I were unsure why we were going. After arguing about it for a minute, my dad said something about not knowing how long we will have each other, which really freaked me out because he was talking about death. They still would not tell me what was going on until he started going to Oklahoma City for tests. I found out that the night he had his appendix removed, the doctors gave him the devastating news that they thought he could have pancreatic cancer, which would leave him with only months to live. Luckily, all the tests came back with good news and he did not have cancer, yet a change occurred in my dad and at times, I saw him behaving very …show more content…
It was not always easy to trust that my dad knew what he was doing and sacrificing for the betterment of others, but over the years I have come to appreciate the decision that he made, and even though he may not think it was the best, it brought my family closer together and we all gained an abundance of trust and respect for one another. Support is a major factor in a family that sticks together through thick and thin. When the doctors thought my dad was sick I did not know what to think or feel. All I wanted to do was cry, but I don’t think that I have ever loved or appreciated my family more. Family Values Nostalgia for the 1950s is real and deserves to be taken seriously, but it usually shouldn 't be taken literally. (pg.33 of What we really miss about the 1950’s) Growing up in a two parent household who base their parenting abilities on what the Bible has to say, can relate a lot to being in the 1950s. In the third grade, my Dad and I drove home from a birthday party for one of his fellow police officers. The festive and upbeat night took a turn for the worst when we reached the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Robert Road in Redondo beach; we had unexpectedly struck the back fender of a truck and spun out into the center of the intersection. As I sat in disbelief, my Dad spoke to the other driver and they exchanged information. He drove home with a sullen look that was new to me, we didn't say a word. At home, I sobbed as I overheard my Dad stress to my Mom that he would lose his beloved job.…
