I. Abstract Diversity in engineering on global projects has been an ever-improving topic in engineering. With less diversity in the engineering and construction field there will be fewer advancements in both practice and in technology.
II. Introduction The lack of diversity in the engineering workforce on global projects is an ongoing problem, with only little signs of improvement. Efforts to promote diversity in U.S. engineering schools, …show more content…
Review of the Literature Lack of diversity in the engineering field has become an important issue. Anything from legal issues, lack of workforce, and the quality of work from the engineering field. In recent years the percentage of women and minorities going into engineering and construction has been on the decline, however organizations such as WIE (Women in Engineering) and WMEP (Women and Minorities Engineering Programs). In some cases when bidding on projects it is required to have a certain percentage of women and minority owned businesses bid on parts of projects. Gaining interest in engineering starts in schooling and enforced more so at the collegiate level. According to a study done in 2005, women’s participation in STEM programs went from 16.4% down from 19.6% in 1998 (Xie and Shauman 2005). Another study states that only 9% of American engineers are women and only 20% of engineering degrees are earned by women (Margolis and Fisher, 2002). While some of these factors may contribute to women having children and having to stay home to take care of them, these numbers are still very low. Efforts are being made to change the male-dominated stigmatism of engineering by introducing women into engineering through schooling,
