Pencils of Promise (PoP) was started when twenty-one year old, Adam Braun, was on a college trip in India. He saw a young boy who was a street beggar and asked the boy what he most wanted in the world. “A pencil,” the boy answered. Adam then reached into his backpack and gave the boy a pencil causing a smile to appear on his face and his eyes to brighten with joy. Over a period of five years, Adam traveled to more than fifty countries just to hand out thousands of pens and pencils to children in poverty. PoP is a nonprofit global education organization that is located in New York, New York. It was founded by Adam Braun in October of 2008 and started with only a $25 deposit. By 2015, Adam’s goal was to build at least 500 schools, train 1,000 teachers, and have 10,000 students in their scholarship program (Pencils of Promise Is). Their teacher support program is for those who want to donate to help PoP support their teachers. They have a website so one can donate money for the teachers in these countries. They also have a program for these teachers called “teacher training”. The training program consists of one-on-one coaching sessions (Help). The training program was developed because of under-trained teachers in Ghana, Guatemala, Laos, and Nicaragua, which means they lacked tools, guidance, and peer support. The PoP team also developed a WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) program which is taught in the classrooms. The reasoning for this program being taught, is to help prevent missed school for a preventable illness. Over 272,000,000 days of school are missed due to these preventable illnesses. This helps to teach the kids to wash their hands and keep a good hygiene to stay healthy. WASH also involves in building restrooms inside these schools (Center). This program also helps track the student’s health and sanitation behavior. WASH has trained 5,040 students since the year of 2009. To help these children understand how to properly wash their hands they used glitter. This helped the children realize how easily germs can be removed by simply washing their hands.
