I thought that this film was incredibly well-made. I greatly appreciated the call-to-action near the film’s end, encouraging viewers to vote for leaders who will fight for climate change, especially since we are nearing a crucial election where one candidate has openly denied the existence of climate change, claiming that it is merely “a hoax” and that global warming is simply “the weather”. This feel made me feel anger, not only at my own ignorance, but at the inability of countries which are greatly contributing to climate change to act, especially the United States. The citizens of Mexico, who are engaging in water wars over rights to freshwater, are collapsing under the weight of poverty. It is not fair to expect the 663 million people who do not have access to safe drinking water and who are struggling to survive on a daily basis to understand, and subsequently act, the negative effects of global climate change, even if their actions may be contributing negatively to the environment. However, those with millions of dollars under their belts, such as the Koch Brothers, use their wealth to lobby Congress on behalf of the fossil fuel sector. Although wealthy persons such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Elon Musk are using their prominent social statuses to fund research on global climate change and to lead initiatives that find way to use energy in a cleaner fashion, they do not have the same influence on legislation as members of the government who can actually vote on …show more content…
The Media in China, for example, discusses climate change on a daily basis. Meanwhile, in the United States, the Media reports on what is deemed “interesting” and what will make these large media corporations gain greater profits. Many do not find global climate change “interesting” because they either believe it is a myth, do not understand how their actions affect the global climate, or they believe that it is a problem for future generations to fight. It is imperative that the issue of global climate change must be highlighted, whether it be through the Media reporting on massive demonstrations constituents partake in to demand change for their environmental concerns or through governments passing legislation which require schools to teach about massive environmental concerns, such as these, and what can be done to combat these incredible issues.
