In today’s society school districts are enrolled by a wide range of diverse learners. Successful teachers understand the differences with each student in the classroom. Amongst the many diverse learners in today’s society, the lesbian and gay community is one that still receives criticism. Having the opportunity to witness the GLIDE presentation provided me an educational view in a gay and transgender perspective.
This is my first time hearing about The GLIDE organization. After witnessing the impact of their presentations, I believe it is important for successful teachers to have knowledge of students within the gay and lesbian community. One lesson I learned. From Nick was that the high percentage of homosexuals on the streets in Los Angeles. Knowing that she had a heterosexual marriage and children before she became transgender displayed the sacrifice she made in order to be comfortable in life. There are a lot of children who are “in the closet” because of the fear of rejection from family members and our peers. She keeps to herself in class and is very quiet. Michaela told the class that when she was growing she couldn’t tell anybody the women inside her because it was not as accepted as much as it is today. I currently have a transgendered student in my classroom. She keeps to herself in class and around her peers. Our school is in the inner- city that has students who have a lack of knowledge on the gay and lesbian community. Students who still use homophobic slurs within their vocabulary. With the student a transgendered student in an inner-city community, I can imagine the urge to socialize with peers that cannot respect differences in
