In December I completed all of the classes and requirements for graduation. I will not be returning to Morehouse for the Spring 2017 semester, and I am sadden to renounce my current Glee Club membership status. Hi Maham, Thank you for reaching out to me today and offering me a Fall Co-op position. After our phone call, I was able to meet with one of the civil engineering advisors to discuss the position and the Rutgers co-op program requirements. I was informed that I will be able to get credits for doing this co-op by submitting a report at the end of the Fall or Spring semester. The credits can count toward my department elective class, and science elective class as well. I would prefer to work full-time as I can gain more experience cross-training between different departments and get Rutgers credits at the same time.…

My experience in the Mary Poppins cast has been probably one of the best things to happen to me so far in my life. At my old school in 10th grade I was in theatre, then the following year I was bullied out, and I desperately missed theatre. It was my life, I enjoy it so much and it is such a part of me. So coming here and deciding to audition on just the second day of school was a really big deal for me. I was absolutely terrified to, but I stuck through and did it anyways, and I am so happy that I did.…

After touring Georgia College, I became excited for the future ahead of me. I can visualize myself draped in a dark robe, standing on a stage to receive my diploma, thinking nostalgically of the memories I hold with GCSU. I think of the clubs I involved myself in such as environmental initiatives and community service clubs. I notice my peers who helped me to succeed, regardless of how overwhelmed I sometimes felt, who encouraged me and reminded me of my strengths. I reflect on the semester I spent abroad to embrace the Spanish culture and language.…

“Get the hell out of my car,” urged my mom with a smile. Wearing an unnecessarily large backpack and reveling in the significance of the moment, I caught my reflection in the window: a young, slender man with “black” skin from my father, “almond shaped” eyes from my mother, and a big smile all my own. My walk turned into a stride with swagger, pleased with what I see. Before my day at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Tecnhnology(TJ), I looked back at mom one last time for reassurance. It was my first day of class; I pushed open the government-issued doors and was transported to the bustling streets of China.…

Today, we get to celebrate the culmination of our thirteen years of hard work in school with graduation, and I have been asked to deliver this year’s commencement speech. I would like to thank all of the people that have brought us here: family members, teachers, principals, and people who would go out of their way to encourage us to keep trying hard even in the midst of failure. Without you, we would not be standing on this stage today. I would like to start by defining the word “commencement.”…

Graduation was a time to celebrate my achievements, to celebrate growing up and maturing into adulthood, to celebrate my friends and family that guided me along the way, and most importantly to celebrate one chapter coming to an end, and another one just beginning. The night before graduation I could hardly sleep as I knew that my high school career would soon be over. I got up that next morning, took a shower, put my makeup on, straightened my hair, and put my favorite black dress on, only this time I had my chords, cap, and gown to go with it.…
