Glaucoma Research Paper

Late presentation of Glaucoma to health facilities is mostly influenced by poor knowledge of the disease, its risk factors and associated consequences. Sources of eye health information is limited and obtained mostly from family members or friends based on past experiences as such, the available information may be inaccurate and influenced by traditional beliefs. In addition, appropriate information is poorly targeted to persons at risk of developing the disease hence, the health and economic burden of glaucoma is continuously increasing. The Nigerian National Blindness and Visual impairment Survey has shown that glaucoma is the most prevalent cause of blindness and has emphasized the need for increasing glaucoma awareness and patient education in reducing blindness from this disease (Abdu 2013). In addition, (Prior et al. 2013) suggested that it is appropriate to design targeted interventions to change behavior because increased patient awareness and education programs might encourage earlier detection.

The state of eHealth research in developing countries shows that there is inadequate evaluation of its interventions, little evidence on effectiveness as well as insufficient evidence on health impact (World Health Organization 2011). eHealth interventions in Nigeria are expanding rapidly particularly in respect to maternal and child health with some evidence of behavior change (Priya 2015) however, there is paucity of evidence on its impact in respect to health and particularly eye health.
