Glassroots Case Study

Founded in January 2001, GlassRoots was created with the belief that communities can be transformed and elevated through the arts. GlassRoots believes the community, more specifically the youth age group, held enormous potential. Glassroots feels this can be realized only if they were empowered with the ability to do something special. Pat Kettenring, a former Rutgers professor created the organization. Fire is dangerous, exciting, and fascinating. At Glassroots the fire can be utilized to create beautiful things. Creating glass art is not the only benefit of this great program. Students are taught basic business and entrepreneurial concepts in the hopes one day they can bring their individual talents to the marketplace. Through their experience at GlassRoots and with each other, students learn skills that money can’t buy. Hilltop’s program was designed to provide youth with a pathway to self-sufficiency through employing glassmaking skills. GlassRoots expanded the Hilltop model by adding formal training in color, form, spatial concepts, communication design and computer skills—and a sequential entrepreneurial skills segment that develops an understanding for how one creates and operates a business.
