In the beginning of scene 1, Tom says “He is the long-delayed but always expected something that we live for” (Williams 5), which symbolizes that the gentleman caller was long overdue. Therefore, it resembles that the family’s hope of having a brighter future is greater because Amanda and Tom can take off the weight on their shoulders knowing that Laura has someone to take care of her. Because Laura is 24, Amanda wonders about what would happen to Laura and says, “What are we going to do, what is going to become of us, what is the future?” (William 12). Amanda is looking into the future to see what the future holds for them because Laura being there at home without a significant other makes them stuck.
