Through the past, the present, or the future, people always need a happy life. In this society, nowadays, there are still a lot of women who are victims of domestic violence. Coming back to the 1900s, however, Mrs. Wright in the drama “Trifle” written by Susan Keating Glaspell in 1916, has no more joy in her life after she married. Mrs. Wright in particular and a lot of women in general were victims of an unjust society. At that time, women had no right to vote. In Glaspell’s drama, as a hidden character, Mrs. Wright is put in a position of killing her husband. …show more content…
Wright is in the jail, the canary is the only one that supports her. She is the suspect in the death of her husband, but she is absent in the drama. The life of the canary reflects the life of Mrs. Wright before and after marriage. Mrs. Hale tells Mrs. Peter the memory of Mrs. Wright’s youth in her regretful voice. Before marriage, she was Minnie Foster, who used to be an active girl with lovely clothes and sing in the choir with the town girls (Glaspell 774-775). Like the bird before being in the cage, she and her canary were independent. They found happiness from singing. Nevertheless, Ms. Wright's life has been bound in a low light house after marriage like a bird trapped in a cage. Mrs. Wright lost her freedom and joy. Also, the birdcage with a broken door, which is discovered by Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters, symbolizes the domestic violence in this situation. Since some of the acts of emotional abuse include threatening or hurting pets or forcing other people to do things that they do not want to do (Nichols par. 28), Mrs. Wright got received emotional abuse because her husband killed her pet. Nichols also points out the negative effects of victims who experience emotional abuse. She says emotional pains last longer than physical pains (Nichols par. 29). As the result, Ms. Wright must have suffered mental pain for a long time without sharing and help from

“While the standard polarization of human being in a crime story is normally dividing by the law abiding citizens from the criminal, the characters here are soon divided on the basis of sex differences.” (Alkalay) In Susan Glaspell’s “Trifles” Glaspell uses a murder investigation of a woman’s husband to demonstrate the different roles of men and women in the early 1900’s. Glaspell shows the reader, through small significant objects that the men think are inessential to illustrate the greater value women have other than merely taking care of a household. She illustrates through important evidence the importance of individuality, and freedom between men and women.…

The author Susan Glaspell is well known for her work on Trifles and A Jury of Her Peers. Glaspell was “inspired to first write Trifles in 1916 from a murder trial that she reported on in 1900 (Pingkan).” Not only did her experience as a court room reporter help to inspire Trifles but also a year later the story version of the play called A Jury of Her Peers. While the real murder that occurred in 1900 that inspired both works were influential, the time period also inspired these works. Glaspell lived in the early 1900s and was influenced by the beginning of the women’s rights movement.…

The story could be considered as having began the day prior when Mr. Wright was killed or many years before that when Mrs. Wright married him and changed so much. “Trifles” has a climactic structure as is evidenced by restricted characters, locale, and scenes as well as a plot that starts very late in the story. Protagonist “Trifles” is different from many other plays in the fact that the main character of the play, is never actually seen. Mrs. Minnie Wright is the main character.…

Trifles gives a perfect example of a classical linear plot with exposition, an inciting incident, rising action, climax, and finally falling action. Although, most of the play takes place in the rising action the inciting incident and climax and climax are arguable the most important aspects of a play. In Trifles specifically where the inciting incident that spurs the action throughout the rest of the play has been up for interpretation since the play was written. I personally think that the inciting incident is when we realize that Mr. Wright is dead. This occurs on the top of the second page of the play when Mr. Hale is describing the events the prior morning.…

Women in the 1900s were treated unequally by men, especially their husbands. More specifically, wives were expected to remain home and tend to household duties. The play, Trifles, by Susan Glaspell, highlights some of the preeminent inequalities between husbands and wives. According to the Merriam-Webster website, the definition of a “trifle” is, “something that does not have much value or importance.” Furthermore, the title allows us to infer that the play is going to deal with women being seen as frivolous and irrelevant.…

and Mr. Wright are perhaps the most important characters of the play; the murderer and victim. Although neither character makes an appearance, one of them in jail and the other dead, much is inferred about them and their relationship through the dialogue of the characters, particularly Mrs. Hale who was their neighbor. It is a widely known fact by all the characters that Mrs. Minnie Wright was oppressed, mainly by her husband, but through Mrs. Hale’s recollection, we discover about the life of Ms. Minnie Foster. Before she was wed, Minnie Foster “used to wear pretty clothes and be lively…one of the town girls singing in the choir” (Glaspell 322). But there seemed to be a change after she married Mr. Wright; Minnie Foster seemed to die and the shell of what remained was left as Mrs. Wright.…
