Following in the footsteps of pop dandy David Bowie, Styles has “posited gender and sexuality as performative through his public image both onstage and off” (Auslander, 2006, pg. 107). Styles is constantly surprising both the media and his fans by doing the unexpected, whether it’s breaking gender norms, supporting Emma Watson’s feminism campaign #HeForShe, or kissing James Corden on live television. He’s comfortable with himself and his sexuality, not that he ever defines what that sexuality might actually be. During a recent interview Styles and his band-member Liam were asked what they look for in a date. While Liam jokes, “Female — that’s an important trait.” Harry casually interjects, “Not that important” (Jones, 2014). While most male singers wouldn’t be secure enough to say something like that, Styles makes the comment with ease. Along with this statement, Styles’ sexuality has been questioned because of his rather effeminate dancing. Much of the media has noticed how the he dances on stage, and they aren’t sure what to make of the twirling or the feminine and somewhat flamboyant gesticulation. That being said, Styles continues acting the same on stage, regardless of the connotation. He knows who he is, and that seems to be all that matters. Unfortunately, this wasn't always the
