History has shown us that Gladiators were a major important part of Roman history but throughout my research I discovered some major key points on what extent their purpose was and what their origin was. Here is an overview of what Gladiators were. Gladiators were first known in Rome in the third century around the year 216 BCE. They were considered as the stars (like modern day wrestlers). To become a Gladiator you would either have to be a prisoner of war or a slave. In order to become a Gladiator, you would have to be strong and be able to fight. Fights could last up to a surprising 12 days. They used the following weapons that were used in most of their fights: Gladius Gracecus, (A leaf shaped sword,) Parma, (A shield,) Iaculum, (A net,) Gladius (a sword) and a Fascina, (A harpoon.) There are many more weapons to list but here is just a few that they used the most.

Different types of weaponry were used to have success each fight such as the Parma, Fascina, Iaculum, and finally the Gladius (which their name comes from) and many more to list. Pompey the Great brought the gladiators to many victories. He was initially called Magnus in Africa, meaning “Great”. Pompey may have been assassinated on the battlefield but is still remembered today as a celebrity leader of the gladiators. During the fights the losing gladiator, if not killed would drop his weapon and shield and would have to raise a thumb or finger. It was considered being professional if you killed your opponent. If the emperor was present then he would make the choice. Different Gladiators had different training for combat. Fighting till death was their motto. Different types of fights could last up to twelve days. Men as you know, were called Gladiators, however, women were called Gladiatrix and fought without a lot of armor. To be a Gladiator was hard.
