“The bigger they are, the harder they fall. ”- Joe Walcott. This is true for boxing, but especially true for the Roman Empire. Rome began as a small settlement on the banks of the Tiber River and, with help from swords, shields, and spears, conquered land from most of the Old World.…
Ancient Rome was one of the more well known empires in history. Even though there were some disputes within Rome as it was growing, they still were able to expand and build an even larger empire and even reach, what historians call the ¨Pax Romana¨, which was their time of peace among the people. In about 750 BCE there were no signs of infighting and everything was going smoothly. However, under the surface of what was going on, these old disputes were almost all about their government. Rome went from being a republic to an empire, then eventually a dictatorship, which meant that they were a very undecided and organized culture.…
The gladiator was an armed fighter, who fought in the arenas to entertain audiences thought-out the Roman Empire from 264AD-404CE. “The term gladiator derives from the Latin gladiatores in reference to their principal weapon the gladius or short sword.” The majority of the gladiators were slaves fighting against other gladiators, wild animals, and condemned criminals. The origins of gladiators and the gladiator games are often disputed, but gladiators were believed to have started from the Etruscan civilization for religious purposes. For the Roman Empire, the “gladiator games were an opportunity for Emperors and rich aristocrats to display their wealth to the populace, to commemorate military victories, mark visits from important officials,…
The Roman empire was one of the most successful and feared empire in all of history. Lasting 500 years, from around 31 B.C to 476 A.D, they accomplished a lot of things that inspired many empires for thousands of years even after their fall due to Germanic invaders and problems inside the country itself. Rome was greatly known for their military might and their ability to conquer and govern huge amounts of land. Roman military at the time were one of the most feared, discipline, and loyal, but this would change as Rome grew older. What made Rome’s military one of the most feared during this time period was their ability to conquer anyone that stood in their way.…

In paragraph 5 titled “Big Entertainment” it states “ Huge crowds gathered to watch these warriors battle to their death in amphitheater..” This shows that we believe that most gladiators would fight until they died. We believed that most gladiators were prisoners. In paragraph 6 the archaeologists did say “They were prisoners.”…
Rome is known for many things and its military was one of them. The roman military helped set the precedence of later militaries. Some of the same traits of the roman military was used and is still used in militaries of today. The Roman military was able to conquer most of the known world due to its military strength. Although the roman military was not the largest it was able to things that only a small group of empires had done before.…
To be a “Roman” is “to spare defeated peoples” and to “teach peace to those [they] conquer” and then let them carry on which, leaves little room for revenge (Aen. 6.1135-1137). Battle is one place where the desire to kill is very prevalent, and when instigated, desires can overpower the need to be a proper Roman. Achilles’ son Pyrrhus illustrates this when he shows no mercy to and kills the King, Priam, on the “altar” after stating simply, “now die” (Aen. 2.727-743). Priam is “harmless” and had no chance of survival, yet Pyrrhus murders him anyways--the opposite of how a true “Roman” is supposed to act (Aen. 2.731, 6.1135).…
Ancient Rome was believed to be founded over 750 years ago, by Remus and Romulus. These two were twin brothers, whose father, Mars, was the god of war. Legend has it that Mars had sexual relations with a princess, who birthed the boys. The princesses brother, The King, felt threatened by the twins and put them in a basket to drown in the Tiber. A she-wolf discovered the children in the river, and took them under her care.…
The crime of violence made the streets of Empire’s larger cities unsafe. There is a connection there between The US and The Roman Empire because, in some places, there are very high crime rates. One point that the Romans had that the US doesn’t is the passion for cruelty. They would have so many gladiators battling it to the death to see who is the mightiest. On top of that, everyone loved watching these idiots fighting to the death.…
Not confined only to wars for religious or political reasons or against terrorists and enemies, Rome went to battle for the sake of its very survival. Their economy depended greatly on the acquisition of new territories, whose “plunder was a major source of wealth for commanders and soldiers alike...the Romans developed highly formalized ways of acquiring it and distributing it” (Boatwright 146). With each new conquest, the size of the republic ballooned, enabling them to control much of the trade and travel around the Mediterranean and replenishing food supplies through the annexation of hundreds of miles of farmland and crops. The quality of life skyrocketed with the influx of slave labor that enhanced the travel infrastructure with new roads, provided amenities such as running water from new aqueducts to beautiful bathhouses, and promoted religious zeal by creating impressive temples to honor the gods.…
These games pitted slaves against one another in fights to the death, and featured the wildly popular chariot races. There was no cost to attend for the people, so thousands showed up to witness the games. The games were considered gifts and the main objective of such extravagant events was to gain favor with the people of Rome. Emperors wanted to show the prosperity they brought to the empire and share the spoils of their success with those they ruled. To celebrate his victory over the Dacians, Emperor Trajan sponsored one of the largest gladiatorial exhibitions in Roman history.…

Seneca loathed crowds and gladiatorial games. He explained that crowds were a disease, an illness that stripped a man of his individual ideas and morals. As for gladiatorial games, Seneca preached that watching other humans being killed took away any humanity in the watcher. In our society today, I believe that there are many entertainments, much like gladiatorial games, that degrade the dignity of humans because they are bloody and inappropriate. Seneca believed that it was dangerous and harmful to people to consort with crowds because there are misguidances in large crowds.…
These successes were only made possible by Rome’s superior system of roads, military training, and economy. All of these factors went into creating the Empire, one of most powerful forces of all time. A great Roman author, Virgil once wrote in his book The Aeneid, “Roman, remember that you shall rule the nations by your authority, for this is to be your skill, to make peace the custom, to spare the conquered, and to wage war until the haughty are brought low.” This quote best sums up Rome at the height of its power. Being one of the most influential empires in the world, Rome had expanded greatly, having control over many places.…
The military of Rome is like white blood cells, which fought off intruders to ensure the Empire’s safety. The government and the leaders of Rome were the brain of a body. The Roman government ensured that the rest of the “body” was doing what it needed to do. The last component is the heart. The people of Rome represent the heart.…
