In the movie maximus was a Spanish soldier and was once a great roman army general who everyone loved and respected. He was sent to be killed,he escaped from being killed. He then became a slave,then eventually ended up a gladiator who risked his life and tried to survive just for people's entertainment. He went from a well treated general in the Roman army to a slave or gladiator used just for people's entertainment.He posses some of the traits that a tragic hero needs to have however he does not posses enough to be considered a tragic hero. Maximus possesses some of these traits but not all of them. He doesn't not have the necessary traits for him to be considered a tragic hero. One common trait for a tragic hero he has is that he is a leader of men and is physically or emotionally wound by his experiences. We see this in the movie because in the battle between maximus and the caesar of rome he is slashed in the leg. Prior to the battle the caesar stabbed him to give himself and advantage. At the end of the battle maximus ended up killing the caesar and a few minutes later he drops dead and the people go silent. This was also the fate greater than he deserved.Another common trait is maximus was consistent during the movie and the audience saw no examples of him acting out of
