Gladiator Research Paper

In Rome there was a large group of people they were poor. To keep them happy the government would have different types of entertainment. These events were usually free. Some of the examples of entertainment was chariot racing in the Circus Maximus, having plays in the theater, and a track and field playground where men could practice foot racing, jumping, archery, wrestling, and boxing in a old soldier drill camp. There was another popular form of entertainment and this is the gladiator games. Gladiator games were the most important form of entertainment because there was so many types of gladiators and gladiator games. Some of these types are Bestiarii, Venatores, Eques, Naumachiarii, Sagittarius, Murmillones, and Andabatae. The Bestiarii were gladiators involved in beast fighting. They usually fought with a spear and/or a knife. They wore a Galea, a visored helmet, with decorative crests and basic leather arm and leg wraps. Even though the Bestiarii were highly trained, they had a great chance of death because of the exotic animals they fought. These animals were usually lions, leopards, and tigers but there was sometimes where they would fight different animals. They fought naval battles. In order for them to fight, the emperor had to flood the arena. The Naumachiarii usually were reenacting a previous battle that was in the water. So their armor and weapons depended on what was used in the battle they were imitating. They were expected to either kill someone or drown while doing that. They use two methods of fighting which were ramming and boarding. When they used the method ramming they were trying to flip the opponents boat and when using boarding they would board the opponents boat and fight them.
