I have always been fascinated by human behavior. I pondered the actions of my peers, questioned the foundation of social norms, and often found myself acting as the “mediator” during conflicts between friends and family. For these reasons, I decided to study forensic psychology at John Jay College and originally planned to pursue a PhD in Psychology. My initial goal was to become a clinical psychologist and work with members from marginalized communities. However, as I advanced in my academic career, I became more interested in the study of marginalized societies and cultures. Thus, instead of pursuing a career as a clinical psychologist, I have decided to pursue a PhD in Anthropology or Sociology. As a Doctor of Anthropology or Sociology, I hope to add to our understanding of underrepresented and marginalized communities in order to improve the resources needed to aid the members of these communities. McNair Scholars Program (McNair) at John Jay. As a Gender Justice Advocate, I worked on issues regarding gender and sexuality on campus and facilitated numerous workshops and events regarding issues effecting women around the world. My experience in GJAP strengthened my awareness in regards to gender and prompted my research interest in the sex industry. I learned about the McNair Scholars program during one of my appointments with my academic advisor who knew of my high interest in research and pursuing a PhD. My decision to join the McNair Scholars program was paramount because it provided me with the knowledge and resources I needed to implement my dream of pursuing a PhD.
